Here are the key life lessons from Pixar's movie Soul.

1. Passion and purpose may not be the same

We state the phrase “follow your passion” a lot. We believe by following our passion we will fulfil our purpose. However, the movie questions our belief and presents the opposing scenario.

In the movie, Joe realizes his passion, and purpose are not the same. He was following his passion and starts playing in a Jazz band. However, he does not feel satisfied with it and felt something was missing. And finally, he understood that this was not his purpose. His purpose was to teach and grow new musicians.

It’s perfectly okay if your passion and purpose are not aligned. Sometimes, we are not meant to follow our passion for something better. And this acceptance can improve our lives.

Passion will not lead to a satisfying life, but the purpose will.

2. Joy should not become an obsession

One of the best quotes from the movie is

“When joy becomes an obsession, one becomes disconnected from life”

The movie has brilliantly shown how certain souls have become obsessed with something that they have become disconnected from life. They have lost their awareness and their behaviour has become a pattern. In the movie, they term these souls as lost souls.

This part is so true in our current lives. So many of us have some time in life got disconnected from life and our awareness. We become robotic keep on doing things without knowing the purpose and importance of it.

Even being in your comfort zone and not moving out of it is being obsessed. As it halts your growth and learning and you become part of a robotic process.

3. There is no perfect life

Following is one of the other best conversations from the movie

Dorothea: What’s wrong teach?

Joe: It’s just I’ve been waiting on this day for my entire life. I thought I’d feel different.

Dorothea: I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to this older fish and says, “I’m trying to find this thing they call the ocean.” “The ocean?” says the older fish, “that’s what you’re in right now.” “This?” says the younger fish, “This is water. What I want is the ocean.”

We always aspire to have a perfect life. We work hard to achieve a perfect life. However, the truth is there is no perfect life. Imperfections of life are its perfect nature. No matter where you are and what you have achieved, there will always be something missing.

So, we should surely try to improve our lifestyle and wellbeing, but we should appreciate who we are and what we have. Our natural state is our perfect state.

4. Being in the zone

Multiple inspirational leaders and authors talked about Flow State. As per Wikipedia, “the flow state is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.”

Author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has described how to attain flow state in his book “Flow”. Also, author Stephen Kotler has mentioned it in his book “The Rise of Superman”.

We know the concept of flow state. However, for the first time, someone has presented it visually. And they have expressed it which such visual brilliance and smartness.

The movie illustrates how you give your best performance and output in the flow state.

It makes us realise that we should consciously try to attain flow state in our daily life and work to produce world-class work.
